CHIP Perinatal Program - CHIP Coverage for Unborn Children
 

CHIP logoIf you are pregnant, a Texas resident, you don't have insurance, and you cannot get Medicaid, you may be able to get perinatal coverage from CHIP. This coverage is for your unborn baby. It covers your labor with delivery and your baby's health and medical services for its first months of life.

CHIP perinatal benefits include:

  • Up to 20 prenatal visits
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • The cost of giving birth*
  • Two doctor visits for mom after the birth of the baby
  • Regular checkups, vaccines, and prescriptions for your baby

* Hospital and other costs related to labor with delivery of the baby. Costs from labor that does not result in a birth and false labor are not covered.

Community First Health Plans is a CHIP Perinatal health plan in the Bexar County service area. Our network doctors and providers will help you get the care you need. We are the only non-profit, locally owned health plan available to you. If you have questions, call us. We can help you.

What is Community First's Service Area?
Community First's service area covers Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina and Wilson counties.

What extra benefits does a member of Community First get?
As a CHIP Perinatal member, you have access to the following extra CHIP Perinatal benefits including:

  • 24-Hour Nurse Advice Line
  • Bus tokens for doctor visits and health education classes
  • A prescription discount card your whole family can use
  • Free sports and school physicals
  • Free flu shots for CHIP Perinatal members
  • Personal visits for pregnant women

What is the Member Portal?
Click on the Member Portal button to register. This is a secure website. You can request an ID card, ask to change your newborn baby's PCP, file a complaint, or ask a question. If you are more comfortable talking to a Member Services Advocate, just call. Our phone number is (210) 358-6300. Or you can call us toll-free at 1-800-434-2347. We are here to help you!

Your Prenatal Care Provider
Your prenatal care network includes clinics, OB/GYNs and Family Practice doctors. Click here to see a list of the prenatal care providers and the hospitals where you will deliver your baby. You do not need a referral to call the doctor or clinic of your choice.

Your Baby's Primary Care Provider (PCP)
Your baby's PCP is his or her own doctor or clinic who will provide or arrange for medical care. You can click here to look up your baby's PCP or find a specialist in the Community First network.

What if I want to change my baby's PCP?

Then, you can call a Member Services Advocate or you can request a PCP change through the Member Portal.

What should I do if I have a complaint?
Please call us. A Community First Member Services Advocate can help you. Most of the time, we can help you right away or at the most within a few days. We can help you file a complaint. You can also find our complaint form on this website in the Member Portal. We will let you know we received your complaint, by mail, within five days and send you a decision within 30 days.

At any time, you may file a complaint directly with the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) at 1-800-252-3439. Or, you can write to TDI at the address below.
